Dr. Kathleen Ross, president of Heritage University since it was founded as Heritage College in 1982, has announced plans to leave the university’s top leadership post to run a new, Heritage-based institute dedicated to improving the success of first-generation college students.

Ross will remain as president of Heritage until a successor is chosen.

Ross is known nationally as a leader in higher education, especially in the field of crosscultural communication. She has been recognized with a number of awards, including the 1989 Harold McGraw Prize in Education, the 1991 John Caroll Award from Georgetown University, and the 1995 Washington State Medal of Merit. In 1997 Ross was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, the so-called “Genius Award.” She holds twelve honorary degrees, including those from Dartmouth, Pomona, and Whitworth Colleges; and from Notre Dame, Puget Sound, Gonzaga, Portland and Seattle Universities.
