However, I moved to the United States when I was nine and began to realize that a number of opportunities existed that could brighten my future. A post-secondary education was one of them. With encouragement from my family and teachers, I began to believe that going to college was possible.";
student_desc_2[page] = "I applied, was admitted, and received enough financial aid to make it possible to attend the college of my choice.My father is a custodian at Curtis High School and my mother works at Goodwill. They would have great difficulty helping me pay for college.";
student_desc_3[page] = "I received great advice regarding college selection and I decided Seattle University was especially attractive to me. I like that I’m receiving a Jesuit education that emphasizes critical thinking and service learning. I also like that the classes are small and the student body is diverse. These were all important factors that influenced my final decision.";
student_desc_4[page] = "If I had not received the amount of financial aid Seattle U. offered me I would probably be at UW. I would most likely be missing out on one of my favorite aspects of college—the opportunity to communicate with professors in one-on-one conversations. The professors at Seattle U. are always willing to work with me to overcome my weaknesses and improve my studying and communication skills. I am grateful for their help, and I truly enjoy seeing their enthusiasm for teaching, especially my chemistry professors.";
student_desc_5[page] = "Most of all, I am thankful for the many wonderful and generous public and private foundations and donors who have made it possible for me to attend Seattle University —and there are many. Looking back at the past two years, I am utterly amazed with everything I’ve learned both in school and in life. Seattle University has been a place for me to explore my interests, a place that has taught me to push past personal limitations, and a place where I have made great friends.";
student_desc_2[page] = "I’m incredibly grateful to all those who have helped facilitate my education and, as I see it, the fulfillment of my dreams. Aside from all the dedicated faculty and staff at Seattle University , I was offered a generous financial aid package that made it possible to attend. I receive the Federal Pell Grant, Washington State Need Grant, a Costco scholarship, a couple Seattle University scholarships, and a subsidized federal loan.";
student_desc_3[page] = "I’m not the only one who has invested in my future, which really makes me want to excel in school. My parents, although they didn’t go to college, were very supportive and encouraging. The professors at SU are enthusiastic about teaching and really want you to learn. Being able to so easily access my professors, either by appointment or just by stopping by, keeps me motivated to learn and do well.";
student_desc_4[page] = "While there are some quarters when I’m an absolute slave to the books, I attempt to be a well-balanced individual. I work on campus for Event Support Services, I go to the gym, and I play intramural sports year round. I like interacting with the campus community. There are students from all over the world at SU—different ethnicities, different cultural perspectives. I enjoy learning about other cultures and experiencing new things. Currently, my goals are to be a diligent student and to attempt to live a balanced life spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally.";

student_desc_1[page] = "For more than 20 years, completing a degree in nursing has been a goal of mine. I got out of the Nacy in the 80’s with the intent of getting a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As it turned out, I settled on an Associate in Arts in General Sutides when my children came along. It was very important for me to provide a loving and stable family-ife for my children. Now that they are both in college themselves, I have the opportunity to pursue my educational dream.";
student_desc_2[page] = "I only applied to one college, Seattle Pacific University (SPU), a small Christian college with a great nursing program. I prayed for the financial resources to make it possible to attend. I was willing to do about anything to get the money I needed for college--take out a second mortgage, ask my family, max-out my credit cards, anything. As it turns out, I didn’t need to do any of that.";
student_desc_3[page] = "The financial aid office at SPU has been great. My youngest son is also a student at SPU and they worked with both of us to make sure we received all the aid available to us. I receive a President’s Scholarship, SPU grant, LeMaster Nursing Scholarship, Sophie Anderson Scholarship, and the rest of my financial need is covered through unsubsidized and subsidized Stafford Loans and the Federal Nursing Loan Program.";
student_desc_4[page] = "My favorite thing about SPU is the faculty and staff. They truly care about each student. I’ve waited so long to get here that I’m enjoying every aspect of college, including the endless reading. I’m also eager to graduate and begin my nursing career. I hope to work with children and families in public/community health. Children have always been my first love and they ar our future. I regret not writing down or recording her stories so they could be passed on. While there are a lot of political and religious figures that would be interesting to interview, the reason for being is within the family and friends that we surround ourselves with and love. ";

student_desc_1[page] = "I consider it a blessing that both my twin sister and I are at the colleges of our choice. My mom raised us on her own for 12 years; with both of us going into college at exactly the same time, the cost of tuition was definitely a burden. The burden was compounded by the fact that both my sister and I were looking at small, private schools. My sister chose to attend the University of Puget Sound . I wanted to attend a Christian college that was close to home, but also far enough away.";
student_desc_2[page] = "Seattle Pacific University was perfect for me. I knew financial aid would be an important factor in attending the school of my choice, and luckily the financial aid package SPU presented made it possible to attend. I actually received the most financial aid from SPU, which made my mom happy. I received the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, and a Seattle Pacific University scholarship.";
student_desc_3[page] = "After a few years at SPU, I’m even more grateful for the campus community here than the financial aid I receive. I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for the encouragement of my friends and professors, especially those in my major. I fell ill my sophomore year and wasn’t able to complete my courses. As a result, I lost my financial aid. My professors and friends encouraged me to fight to stay in school. They made me realize that I’m the one in control of what I want and whether I will succeed. I ended up taking out a personal loan to pay for school.";
student_desc_4[page] = "Through the experience of losing financial aid and needing to borrow money, I’ve become a more motivated and driven person. I’m excited and grateful to be pursuing my degree from SPU and know I can achieve what I put my mind to. I hope to one day own a physical therapy clinic. student_desc_1[page] = "Becoming a teacher means a lot to me. When I was in elementary school, I was always put aside while all the other students who spoke English were learning. All I could do was look on because I only spoke Spanish. I didn’t get the same opportunities or learning advantages that other students had and I don’t want that to continue to happen. I want to become a teacher so that I can use both my English and Spanish speaking skills to engage each and every student.";
student_desc_2[page] = "Other circumstances and people were influential in my decision to pursue a teaching career as well; particularly my high-school teacher, Alice Villanueva. I moved to the United States when I was eight years old and things were very different here. I was very shy up until high school when Ms. Villanueva introduced me to several activities and clubs and I eventually became the president of M.E.Ch.A ( Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano/a de Aztlan). MEChA is committed to educational, economic, and political empowerment for the Chicano community.";
student_desc_3[page] = "That’s when I saw college as a possibility. Before that, it wasn’t something my family even considered. My parents always encouraged my brothers and sisters and I to do well in school, but they didn’t have much education past elementary school and making ends meet in our family was hard. My two older brothers actually dropped out of school to help support the family, something my parents never wanted them to do.";
student_desc_4[page] = "With the encouragement of my family, I applied to Heritage University . Heritage was the right fit for me. I didn’t want to move away from home since my mom is ill, and the faculty and staff at Heritage were very helpful. I was the first in my family to attend college so I needed a lot of guidance and advice. Thankfully I received enough financial aid to enroll in college.";

student_desc_1[page] = "I didn’t see college as a possibility until late in my senior year of high school. I knew education was important and the ‘key to success in life’ as my grandparents always said, but moving away from home and paying for college just wasn’t an option for me.";
student_desc_2[page] = "My sisters and I were raised by our grandparents who lived on a fixed income. My grandfather is an African American WWII veteran. My grandmother is a full blooded Native American, descendent of Chief Joseph. She was born disabled and has been confined to a wheelchair for almost her entire life. Seeing the hardships my family went through just to raise us, my sisters and I have all worked hard to do well in school.";
student_desc_3[page] = "I decided to enroll in Yakima Valley Community College after high school. It was there that I realized transferring to a four-year college, namely Heritage University, was not only possible but well within my reach. Heritage works with students at the community college to ensure they are taking the right classes to transfer. I also heard about all the programs and scholarships available at Heritage for students just like me.";
student_desc_4[page] = "Now I’m not only working towards a degree in English, I really enjoy the Heritage campus community. I love the diverse student body at Heritage and it’s been easy to get involved in a number of different clubs and activities. I’m the vice president of the Associated Student Body (ASB), the secretary of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), a member of the Native American Club, and I participate in various athletic clubs. All this and I work about 30 hours a week. The flexibility of course offerings and a faculty and staff that truly want you to succeed make it possible to have a college experience at Heritage, regardless of your situation.";
student_desc_5[page] = "When I graduate, I want to either be a journalist or teach journalism. I know I have a lot to offer my community and the world. My ideas and background are different than most and I can contribute a different perspective. student_desc_1[page] = "I fell in love with the University of Puget Sound campus as a 12 year old. I was attending the Summer Academic Challenge, a math and science enrichment program for at-risk youth in the Tacoma area. Having attended inner-city public schools my whole life, I was charmed by the ivy-laden buildings and grass-lined paths. To learn in an environment like that was truly a tranquil experience for me.";
student_desc_2[page] = "Several years later, I was applying to colleges, the University of Puget Sound was on my list. I applied to many just to make sure I would be accepted somewhere. To my surprise, I was accepted to everywhere. The University of Puget Sound was not only my first choice, but the financial aid office was the most helpful in creating a financial aid package tailored to me. I am an independent student paying for my secondary education all on my own; working with them was critical. I receive a Federal Pell Grant, Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant, a few private scholarships, and lots of grants from the University of Puget Sound .";
student_desc_3[page] = "I’m majoring in English and minoring in African-American Studies, a new minor here at Puget Sound . I hope to someday be a published author and possibly work for a non-profit organization as a grant writer or fundraiser. I like the whole idea of the non-profit sector and volunteerism and doing things that give back to the community. I’m currently a volunteer Christian minister involved in peer mediation, Bible study, and community clean ups. I’m also involved in on-campus activities such as the Black Student Union as the public relations coordinator and the Repertory Dance Group as a choreographer.";
student_desc_4[page] = "The size of the University of Puget Sound makes it easy to get involved and learn. The student-to-professor ratio is probably my favorite aspect. The professors recognize the needs of each student and can address those individually. If I were to give high-school students any advice about college, I would tell them to make connections with administrators and faculty at your campus. You learn a lot from them and will experience things that other students don’t. They’ll recommend you for various programs and positions; all of which are great opportunities.";

I came here with my aunt, uncle, and two cousins so that I could obtain a better education and a brighter future. The University of Puget Sound is making that possible.";
student_desc_2[page] = "I knew early on that the University of Puget Sound was a place where my opinions mattered and where I could become a leader. When I was a senior in high school, I attended a couple classes at the University of Puget Sound and really liked the scholastic and social aspects of the school. The professors were helpful and friendly; a few actually helped me fill out applications for other colleges.";
student_desc_3[page] = "The financial aid package was going to play a big part in what college I would ultimately attend—I have no other source to pay for college. Luckily the University of Puget Sound was able to offer me enough in scholarships and grants, in addition to federal and state grants, that I could attend. I’ve only had to take out a couple loans, which is good because I don’t like to owe people money. I also have plans to receive a Ph.D. and don’t want money problems to hinder that path.";

I decided to pursue a career in nursing. Although I was never very interested in school, P.E. was probably my favorite class in high school and I attended several community colleges without earning an AA degree, I knew going back to school was what I had to do to pursue my career goals.";
student_desc_2[page] = "My mom was a huge influence in my decision to pursue nursing. She had a stroke a few years ago and I was her primary care giver. I always had a very close-knit family. My mother was a single mom with three kids and we saw what a struggle it was to raise us with little help from my father. When my mom had a stroke and needed to be cared for, I took it as an opportunity to repay her for everything she did for me as a child. I truly cherished the time I spent with her and I believe we began a new relationship. I got to know her as an adult.";
student_desc_3[page] = "Now that I am an adult with a daughter of my own, I appreciate school and the education I am receiving. And, I know that I’m setting a good example for my daughter. I receive the Federal Pell Grant, Washington State Need Grant, Washington Educational Opportunity Grant, Gonzaga University Scholarships, an outside scholarship, and Perkins and Stafford Loans. If it wasn’t for financial aid, I believe I would still be idling by at a community college. Prior to that, college wasn’t really a priority to me. I went to community college right after high school but dropped out when I was offered a full-time position at the medical laboratory where I was working. I was young and living with my boyfriend at the time—I just needed to support myself.";

To be a good mom, and wife—I’m engaged to Rhett’s dad—I needed to think about the future and be financially stable. I enrolled again at Spokane Community College and finished my Associate of Arts degree so that I could transfer to a four-year college.";
student_desc_3[page] = "While at Spokane Community College , and through my work at the independent medical laboratory, I developed an interest in accounting. I find all the financial ins and outs of business fascinating. When I was looking at four-year schools to transfer into, a community college professor told me that Gonzaga University had the best accounting program in the area. Most of my classes have less than 20 students; I know that wouldn’t be the case at a larger school. I also like Saint Martin’s tradition of serving others.
